Foster + Partners is a global studio for sustainable architecture, urbanism, engineering and design, founded by Norman Foster in 1967.
The practice’s three in-house workshops are a core part of how the company designs, develops and communicates ideas. Modelmaking sits at the heart of the studio, supporting teams with sketch models, presentation models and large-scale mock-ups produced using both traditional craft skills and the latest digital technologies. As demand for innovation has grown, the workshop spaces and capabilities have expanded, enabling rapid, reactive production and the fabrication of complex components.
Technicians work closely with project teams, offering hands-on guidance, training and specialist services, including laser cutting, hot-wire cutting, vacuum forming, digital cutting, 3D printing and CNC machining. A dedicated CAD support team prepares and organises data to streamline this workflow. Together, these resources ensure that modelmaking remains integral to design exploration, technical problem-solving and the development of high-quality models across the practice.
