Animals & Creatures Fantasy & Sci-Fi Props & Sets

Welsh folklore inspired book launch model, with posable/ animatable characters photographed to illustrate a short story I wrote and designed.

Model illustrating a scene from the book 'Bendith Y Mamau' which I wrote and designed for my FMP. The characters are posable, situated in a woodland scene which I created as a book launch model.

Bloudewedd is made from cernit doll clay, which I chose because of its translucency. I used a square stock over a round armature wire neck to make the neck posable. I used liquid latex and upholstery foam to make the body flexible at the spine and the base of the legs. After hand painting, I created a pattern and sewed the costume, on which I hand painted a mud effect. I applied individual feather fronds to the feet using UV glue. Petals are partly mould and cast, using Modena clay.
For the fern, I started by drawing a fern in rhino, laser cutting it, painting with water colour, and hand applying different thicknesses of wire to each individual leaf to create a realistic and animatable fern.
I sculpted Seren in nomad, and separated it before using a resin printer to print, prime, and hand paint with acrylic paint.
I made the set by designing a structure from polystyrene, which I cut using a hot wire cutter, and covered with a mixture of materials including jesmonite.

To create this 7:1 scale Blue ground beetle, I first studied the structure, and worked out the place in which I could separate the sections to make the mould. Then, I created two acrylic plates, which I heat bent and used as an internal structure whilst sculpting and later to attatch the legs internally. Then, I sculpted the shell and underside of the beetle separately using monster clay, which I mould and cast in fast cast, and assembled along with the head, which is sculpted in milliput and sprayed. The most challenging part of the beetle to represent was the blue and purple sheen on its elytra, which required a lot of testing. I found that I could apply a duo chrome pigment with foam to a partially set (2hr 30minutes after brushing on) layer of resin. The legs required two different thicknesses of internal wire structure for maximum strength, which I silver soldered and covered in milliput before spraying and lacquering. I used resin coated paint brush fibres to create the setae.

In order to find a material which would be suitable for this scale, I used a fine weave silk throughout, using stitch length and techniques suitable for a small scale. The corset is backed with layers of contact adhesive, paper, wire mesh, and fabric, in order to stay the same between shots. Access slots at the waist and hip were created for animators to adjust the armature underneath. I designed a hoop mechanism so that both the pleats and the position of the bottom of the skirt could be animated without disrupting the pattern of the pleats which mimic a heavy skirt. I did this by sewing in a hoop, which can expand and shrink, into the hem of the skirt on the inside. Loops at the bottom of soft wrapped wires in the pleats of the skirt attach to this and can move along the hoop. The fabric on the hem of the skirt is layered with small wire loops in order to be animatable, and painted with acrylic paint.

I have a broad range of modelmaking skills with particular interest in hyper-realistic models that accurately capture detail. My passions are replicating elements of the natural world, considering material choice to reflect narratives, and using my sculpting and painting skills to bring to life creatures, characters, props, and artefacts. I have completed stop motion animation work experience at 3 Mills Studios, which is an area I am interested in alongside props, museum, and other industries.
