Adhesive Types
A guide to common adhesives used in model making
General Purpose
Hot Glue
Thermoplastic adhesive applied with a glue gun. Sets quickly, good gap-filling. Bond weakens with heat. Not suitable for fine detail work.
Thermoplastic adhesive sticks melted in an electric glue gun. It bonds by cooling and solidifying, which means it sets quickly (30β60 seconds) and fills gaps well. The bond is mechanical rather than chemical β the glue grips the surfaces rather than fusing with them.
Hot glue is useful for quick assemblies, rough mock-ups, and bonding awkward materials. It works on most surfaces but the bond strength is moderate and can fail under sustained stress or heat. In model making, itβs handy for temporary fixtures, quick terrain building, and anywhere speed matters more than finesse. Use a low-temperature gun on foam materials to avoid melting. Thick beads of glue can show through thin sheet materials, so use sparingly on visible surfaces. The thick glue line makes it unsuitable for fine detail work.
