Shrill Carder Bee

A combination of digital and hand-crafted processes.
A silicone bee model created through 3D printing, mould making, and casting, with hand hair-punching used to achieve lifelike texture and patterning.
The shrill carder bee was scaled up to approximately 15 times its real size, allowing its form and surface details to be seen more clearly.
The brief was to create a large scale model of the Shrill carder bee for Buglife that could be used as an educational and engagement piece to raise awareness of endangered insect species. The model needed to accurately represent the bee’s appearance while also being visually engaging for a public audience. The aim was to encourage people to look more closely at an often overlooked species and highlight its importance within UK ecosystems through detailed model making.

Five Commedia dell’Arte masks, each made using different materials and processes to compare how technique influences finish, durability and character.

Five Commedia dell’Arte masks

My project explored five Commedia dell’Arte mask models, each made using a different material and process. Arlecchino was digitally sculpted and 3D printed, creating a smooth and professional finish. Pantalone was made using Worbla formed over a 3D print, making it lightweight, flexible, and practical for theatre. Il Dottore was hand-sculpted, moulded, and wet-formed in leather, giving it the most traditional and authentic feel. Pulcinella was cast in Modroc, making it an affordable and accessible method, although slightly heavier and more fragile. Il Capitano was slush-cast in liquid plastic and finished with paint and a moustache, creating a strong, characterful, and durable mask.

Overall, the masks helped me compare digital and handmade techniques, showing how different materials affect the finish, authenticity, durability, and character of each design.

Vintage handmade doll, placed in a small wooden cart among old toys, designed to feel both unsettling and sympathetic.

Vintage Doll Prop

A static film prop in the form of a vintage handmade doll designed to evoke unease, curiosity, and empathy. The doll combines a sheep’s head with a human doll body, dressed in a carefully made costume made from aged and repurposed materials. It is imagined as an object discovered in the attic of an old house, resting inside a small wooden wagon surrounded by toys. Although worn with age, it appears unusually well preserved, suggesting a mysterious personal history.
I used a range of making techniques including hand sculpting, moulding and casting, hand sewing, and metalwork. Through material testing, I explored different ageing processes to weather surfaces and fabrics, using techniques such as tea staining, as well as creating my own ageing solution from white vinegar and steel wool. Ammonia was also used to further distress materials. Alongside traditional making methods, I used digital sculpting and 3D printing to create the vintage toys, combining handmade and digital processes.

I’m a modelmaker focused on prop making, creating detailed, handcrafted objects for visual storytelling. I work across mixed media including resin, fabric, and sculpted materials, using both traditional and experimental techniques. I’m looking for opportunities in prop, set, or creative studio environments where I can contribute to tactile, character-driven work.
