Model of a Grafton Saxophone made for Heritage of London Trust, to be used in their Bowie’s House project.

To create the body of the saxophone I started by designing it in Fusion 360, and then 3D printed it in four parts. I turned the keys out of brass, using the metal lathe and then silver soldered them to connecting brass elements. All of the other keys and brass details that were not turned, I cut out of sheet brass and then shaped and filed them. The large clear component at the base of the saxophone, I made using laser cut acrylic which I sculpted onto. I then created a two part silicone mould of it, and cast it in resin. In order to create the other clear component above it, I made a wooden former and then vac formed it using PETG. Finally, I assembled the saxophone using brass screws in order to make it as secure as possible.

Other Architecture & Structure

Model of the York Watergate, made for Heritage of London Trust.

I started this project by creating a scaled CAD model of the York Watergate in Fusion 360. I then used the CAD model to produce InDesign files so that I could laser cut the base and walls. I 3D printed the roof and one of the external pillars. I then sculpted onto the pillar to create the shell detail and textured finish. The model needed eight pillars, so I made a mould of the pillar that I sculpted onto and then cast eight copies. I used milliput to sculpt the main crest and shell on the roof of the Watergate. I also used milliput to sculpt the three crests on the rear of the structure and the texture on the external walls. Once the pieces were assembled, I sprayed the model and used a speckle to create the stone- like finish. Finally, I used pigmented resin to produce the water effect on the base.
