Blinking eye and fluid necklace shot

Blinking eye and fluid necklace shot

0cculos explores the tension between expansion and containment. Fluid forms push against a rigid metal framework, appearing to grow, swell, and emerge through restriction. The work reflects on how resistance can shape becoming, turning limitation into the condition for new form.

Piece made specifically for the Loewe Craft Prize award.

This piece was constructed through a labor intensive process of steel dome shaping, carefully forming and soldering the spherical metal framework by hand. To create visual contrast, I explored a range of materials and experiments that led me to resin for its fluid-like qualities. The swelling, rupturing orbs were made by casting charcoal and pigmented resin inside balloons, allowing the material to form organic shapes within the rigid structure. The result is an object born from its own constraints.

The Body Unbound investigates the hidden architecture of the human body through a series of jewelry/wearable sculptures informed by anatomical and internal systems. The body is reinterpreted as both ornament and structure, creating an interplay between flesh and the skeletal infrastructures that sustain it. Displacement, exaggeration, and recontextualisation of the body are used to distort the familiar, inviting the viewer and wearer to reconsider the body beyond its rational understanding.

This collection brings together traditional metal craft and contemporary digital techniques, threading handcraft and technology. Using silver, brass, nylon 3D print, life casting, wax sculpting, metal shaping, soldering, CAD, and digital sculpting, the pieces explore a hybrid material language. Works such as the blinking eye also incorporate handcrafted movement mechanisms, adding a sense of animacy to the jewellery. Together, the collection reflects a diverse and experimental approach to making.

From Nacre, imagines a surreal underwater myth, where a baby pearl lies cradled within an oyster and blows alternate selves into existence. The oyster becomes a small cosmic stage, holding the pearl child in a space between birth, dream, and creation. Each orb breathed into the water forms a small realm, carrying the silent wander of childhood before words. The work presents birth as a playful multiplication of the self, where one being dreams many possible selves into form.
The baby face, reminiscent of a Renaissance cherub, brings an essence of innocence, romanticism, and quiet divinity. It becomes an emblem of childlike wonder, sacred, and softly mythical.

The piece was created through a combination of clay sculpting, plaster, chicken wire, fast cast, moulding & casting, cellulose spray, and resin experimentation, gradually building its organic shell like and pearl like qualities.
