I started by designing the sword structure in Rhino, including a welded steel frame and an armature structure for the skulls on the hilt. The skull armature was 3D printed in PLA and then sculpted over using Chavant NSP, and moulded and cast in fibreglass twice. The blade of the sword and the parry hooks were shaped in chemiwood using workshop tools and the mill before being moulded and cast in Fibreglass. The plate the skull sits on was modelled in Rhino and 3D printed using Nylon Sinter for strength and precision, with a groove to slot over the steel frame. The horns were made by 3D scanning the skull sculpt, then using a mix of Rhino and Zbrush to create the shape and texture, these were then 3D printed in Nylon SLS and attached to the skulls using epoxy clay to blend them together. The other accessories were made digitally and 3D printed in SLA. The grip is wrapped in a 12-strand suede braid, and the crossguard wrapped in leather. The sword is painted using glass-to-mirror paint.

Human Figure Animals & Creatures Fantasy & Sci-Fi

A conceptual bust of my take on a Mindflayer, a Dungeons and Dragons creature, capturing a person and beginning to feast on their brain.

I developed this creature bust from sketches to reality using an interative process of maquettes, making 3 in total based on sketches I had done, and then taking elements from the previous bust I liked and encompassing in new elements. Using the maquettes, I developed a final sketch which I used to design an armature in Rhino. The bust was sculpted in clay over a welded steel armature, then bulked out with chicken wire and plaster. The eyeballs were modelled in Rhino and 3D printed, filled, and then moulded and cast. I then moulded the sculpt using tin-cure silicone with a plaster and skrim jacket, strengthened with batons of timber. I then painted PU resin into the mould, building up layers, with the inner layers being bulked out and strengthened with polyfibre and chopped strand. Seam holes were patched with epoxy clay, and then the whole bust was painted using acrylic, with the patina of colours and tones applied using an airbrush and stencils I made from acetate.

Monoco is a fully interval moveable stop-motion puppet designed to look like he is made out of wood, with articulating ball-joint shoulders and hips. He is made primarily out of 3D printed PLA using a 0.2mm nozzle that make up his external chassis, off-the-shelf stop-motion ball joints internally connected to M3 threaded bars, and hand-milled aluminium joints for his elbows, knees and ankles which are exposed. The model was designed using Rhino 3D to position the internal joints and placement of the exposed joints, and Zbrush for the profile shaping and texture additions.
