Sustainable Architectural Models of the refurbished Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, by Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios. I conducted sustainability research to inform the materials used for this project. I worked primarily with card, making use of different textures and thickness present in each card. The beam structure is made out of cardboard and backed with a card scored on the laser cutter. Elements of the model use recycled and waste card, manipulating its appearance to reference architectural details. Other elements are simply scored with a scalpel. Plywood & coloured card is used for structure and modern elements of the refurbishment. I used Oak timber, sourced locally to Brighton, to appreciate the building’s history and FCB’s reference to the original architecture.

The card game uses the Montessori Method of teaching, with a focus on helping KS2 students with ADHD. Learning through play is an integral part of early years education, but is rarely used for students aged 7-11, despite being documented as an effective learning method for neurodivergent students. Montessori’s material use influenced my use of wood and metal, due to their natural properties. I screen-printed the cards with bitmap files, to create texture on each image. The tactile cards link the national curriculum and interests of students, connecting education with the lives of students outside of school. I used dyslexia friendly fonts and acetate to make the cards readable for these users. Students build a board of visual or abstract links to assist teachers or parents to adapt teaching to each child’s needs. There is no right or wrong answers, which encourages students to take risks and grow confidence voicing their opinions in a group setting.

Set of three Blind Box Figurines made in collaboration with AUB alumni illustrator, Heidi Teremetz. I worked with the client to adapt their illustrations into a physical form. I sculpted using Nomad and hand painted the models to capture the organic forms of the original artworks. I used Sculpey to turn the drawings into physical forms, then UV Resin printed the digital models. Blind Boxes have become a cultural phenomenon, contributing to waste and overconsumption. I worked to find ways to reduce waste through the packaging, using sustainably sourced card from a local printing company in Bournemouth. The box is designed to be used as a house for decorative storage. I reduced unnecessary waste, creating a collectors card that advertises the other figurines on the reverse of the original Artwork.
